Why do we have to order U.S. non-reloadable and Canadian non-reloadable cards through the Chrome Extension?

U.S. and Canadian non-reloadable cards must be processed via our Chrome Extension because the issuers require the redemption steps to run on the user’s device (not from a server). The extension handles:

Note 9/29/2025: The U.S. Non-Reloadable card is now available on the web.

U.S. and Canadian non-reloadable cards require a special card retrieval process that's only available through our Chrome Extension. This process involves:

  1. Opening a background tab to the card issuer

  2. Automatically inputting card login information

  3. Extracting card details securely

  4. Uploading information to Laso servers

The reason it currently goes through the extension is that the issuer requires the end user's device to do the redemption, we cannot centralize it from one of our servers/VMs/team members. When you order on the extension, the extension simply facilitates the redemption on your behalf.

Alternatively, we can't just give the link to users to do the redemption, because there are so many ways that an incorrect redemption can cause the card to be frozen (incorrect billing details, VPN on, etc.), and if the card is frozen, we are not able to retrieve the funds on the user behalf.

International non-reloadable cards use a different issuer that requires manual redemption by the Laso team, which is why they're available through the web interface instead.
