I was waiting on a refund on a transaction authorization. Now it's gone. What happened?

If the authorization no longer appears, it means the merchant never finalized (settled) the charge.

When an authorization no longer appears in your transaction list, it means the merchant never finalized the charge, and the hold on your funds was released. The money is immediately added back to your available balance.

Every card (Laso or otherwise) goes through two steps: authorization and settlement:

  1. The merchant checks if funds are available and places a temporary hold.

  2. If the transaction is finalized, it's settled and the funds are withdrawn.

An authorization can last anywhere from a few milliseconds to 30 days. During that time, it remains in a pending state until it's settled or dropped.

For quick purchases, like at a convenience store, the authorization and settlement happen nearly instantly, so you just see a single finalized charge.

For delayed settlements, it can be a bit more complex:

  1. At a restaurant, your bill is $50.

  2. The merchant places an initial authorization for $50.

  3. You add a $10 tip.

  4. The merchant settles the transaction for $60.

A refund happens when a settled transaction is reversed. For example, you return a product you received on Amazon.

But if an authorization never settles, it's canceled. In that case, the hold disappears and your balance updates. No transaction ever appears.

Dropped authorizations don't stay in your transaction history because they were never finalized. To the card issuer, it's as if the transaction never happened.
